MUSICAL THEATER IN THE STYLE OF FILM

Those of you who know me know I’ve been all over the map artistically (Opera>Theater>Film>Film AND Theater Lol.) and that one of my favorite things is experimenting/mixing mediums/crossing genres.

I’ve been especially inspired by performances that combine multiple disciplines (a la Anne Hathaway’s award-winning I Dreamed a Dream in the Les Mis movie, or Emily Blunt in Into the Woods)

I set myself a challenge recently to record some of my favorite musical theater songs—but done as if they were going to be put into a film.... i.e. lifelike, intimate acting and singing that mimics speech as closely as possible.

Singing really is just organized yelling/talking/whooping/expressive-soundmaking, so in these vids I decided to prioritize the human expression of the text over perfect technique. I had some amazing collaborators who were wonderfully inventive with the limited resources at hand and quite patient with my crazy ideas! (Looking at you Will Jellicorse and Christopher D. Littlefield! )

As with all creative experiments, the results are mixed and beauty is in the imperfection. :)

All takes are raw and un-doctored. Please enjoy.
